Ella Adeline Desiatnyk (nee Weigelt) passed away peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Tuesday, March 10, 2026 at the age of 90 years.
Ella was born on April 30, 1935 to parents Reinhart and Emma Weigelt. She grew up on the family farm in Moosehorn, Manitoba with her five brothers and two sisters, where she attended New Home School, a one room school house. Ella loved the outdoors, preferring to work with her dad outside, helping with horses, making hay, milking cows and even helping to build their barn. She also loved gardening and planted all kinds of flowers. While in school, Ella participated in many sports including baseball and curling. She loved to dance and attended as many dances as possible. After completing her education Ella moved to Winnipeg where she began working as a nurse’s aide at the Winnipeg General Hospital. She loved helping people and was admired for her caring and generous nature. In 1956, while attending her sister’s wedding, Ella met Peter Desiatnyk. They were married on August 17, 1957, and began their life farming south of Sandy Lake where they raised their five children. Ella was a great cook, always ready with a meal for guests who stopped by. She knew every grandchild’s favourite dish and made sure it was available when they visited. She was also very good at crocheting and knitting, and was known to always have a good supply of slippers for any visitor to take home. In 2002 she retired to Hobb’s Manor in Brandon, where she lived until moving to Hillcrest Place Personal Care Home.
Ella was predeceased by her parents Reinhart and Emma Weigelt, husband Peter, daughter Debra, son Darwin as well as her brothers and sister.
